Strong social connections help to build on children’s confidence and their ability to establish friendship with others. Children who are connected to their neighbourhood develop a sense of belonging to the community and have the opportunities to learn to get along with others. They will also be aware of the people (i.e. emergency services) to go to when they need help.
Last week, our children had the opportunities to explore on the topic of “My neighbourhood” through their project experiences. The children created models of their neighbourhood together.
Some of the children were given the opportunities of drawing out the neighbourhood map around the school. They had so much fun working together as a group.
The older children drew the neighbourhood map around their preschool.
Besides working on the models and constructing maps, the children also learnt about the facilities available in their neighbourhood. For instance, the children were able to participate in pretend play of posting letters to their friends at post office.
As an integrated approach, our children also get to share their understanding of neighbourhood with their class. It has been a wonderful learning experience for all.
